12 MUST HAVE Travel Apps! ✈️

Technology has forever changed traveling, and utilizing these apps can make your life easier, save you hundreds of dollars, and show you more of the world. I have incorporated many different apps into my travel routine and I have compiled a list of the ones that I and many of my travel friends use plus additional tips.

1. Splitwise

Perfect for any group trip, Splitwise makes all accumulated transactions while traveling easier to manage. The app itemizes charges shared between each other, keeping track of anything purchased throughout the duration of your trip. At the end the app manages unpaid balances, minimizing transactions you have to make between each other.

The example I always give is let’s say Suzy owes Eric $20, but Eric owes Mike $20, instead of Suzy paying Eric then Eric paying Mike, the app removes the middle man making this multiple transaction scenario just a singular payment. Really an amazing App ESPECIALLY if you are on a trip with more than 4-5 people.

Tips for using Splitwise:

Plug in your transactions after they happen so you do not forget who paid what while you are having fun. Make sure you go into settings to turn on the minimize transactions feature so the app actually does what it is supposed to, otherwise it can get confusing for first time users.

2. Pinterest

Where travel bloggers still live! Pinterest is alive and well in the travel community and is one of the best places to find off-the-beaten hikes, destinations, and adventures while you plan your next trip. Many users post destination guides, blogs, and videos formatted to any traveler.

As a content creator I use Pinterest to link my guides, video inspirations, and more. As a user I utilize Pinterest by saving guides and images associated with places I want to explore, so I can look back when I am planning my trip.

Tips for using Pinterest:

Make new boards for each destination you save content for. You can also save most images and videos from the web directly to your Pinterest if the creator has their Pinterest linked to their posts. (Follow me on Pinterest!!)

3. WhatsApp

Stay connected to anyone abroad! WhatsApp is a FREE texting, calling, and facetime app that uses Wi-Fi to keep when you are traveling. Most backpackers and international travelers have an account because it makes the most sense when you are destination hopping. The app allows you to send pictures and videos and saves them in a gallery which is great to look back at when you are not traveling.

Tips for using WhatsApp

Use your personal phone number when setting up the app to sync your contacts that already have a WhatsApp making it easier to connect with friends abroad.

4. Instagram

Still one of the best places for travel inspirations. I use Instagram on every single trip I take because the hashtag system categorizes searches easily and I can save images for later. Follow me on Instagram!

I am also an advocate for not geotagging certain spots to make sure places do not get over trafficked, however if you have followed me on Instagram you probably have realized I always leave clues for you to find a place if you really want. Many creators do the same so make sure you always look at the hashtags, comments, and story reposts before messaging them to see where a picture was taken.

Tips for using Instagram:

You can make separate saved folders based on destination, activity, or time to travel which is a great way to stay organized. Make sure you always scroll down on a post’s hashtags to see if there are any clues about where a destination is.

5. Uber / Lyft

Safe and affordable local travel options in many countries around the world. Uber and Lyft have completely taken over the ride share industry and are now prevalent in many countries. Often these two competitors are even cheaper than taxis or buses, especially traveling in a small group.

Tips for using rideshare apps abroad:

Check local regulations before committing to a rideshare as your main transportation option, because many countries have limitations especially at airports. Do not forget to compare prices to other local options as they are not ALWAYS the most affordable.

6. YouTube

Video catalogues of the coolest places to travel. There are so many travel content creators on the internet these days and YouTube is another great resource when you are planning a trip. I use this site for foodie recommendations as most cities have countless reviews of restaurants and to visit. Follow me on YouTube!

Tips for using YouTube:

Watch the videos before you travel so you have a better idea of how to plan your visit.

7. Hopper

A travel app that actually saves you money?! Hopper is great for impulsive travelers who buy many flights, but want to maximize savings. There are multiple unique features that make Hopper one of the most downloaded travel apps out there including their flight reduction refunds.

If you book a flight through Hopper, and the ticket costs reduce leading up to your trip, Hopper will refund you the difference making sure you always get the lowest price. No more waiting for that random Tuesday at 3:00pm to see if your flight drops in price, just book it and forget it.

8. Global YO

Downloading eSIMS is the best invention of this decade for travelers. No more having to find local SIM cards in gas stations or convenience stores and figuring out how to get them into your phone. This app lets you download an eSIM, getting data and service access in more than 100 countries for only a few dollars.

Tips for using Global YO:

Download and make sure your eSIM is ready before you leave the airport when you land at your destination. These are super easy to use but can be confusing the first times until your settings are set up correct in your phone. Start out with a small data plan and reload as you use to only spend money on what you need.

9. Mobile Passport Control

Get back into the country without waiting in long customs lines. Using this or Global Entry is the only way I travel back into the United States now. You can fill out all your declaration forms ahead of your flight and ease through customs with a fast pass.

Tips for using MPC:

Always make sure everything is updated in the app including you passport, personal information, and flight data.

10. Google Translate

Another revolutionary invention of this century giving travel access to millions of people. Google Translate is not necessary to successfully travel, but if you want to have less stress and more fun use this app! They even developed a scanner where you can point your camera at text on menus, signs, and directions to instantly translate.

11. Citymapper

Citymapper is the budget benchmark for any backpacker utilizing public transportation in cities around the world. The app displays all your transportation options with costs, estimated arrival, and step-by-step directions.

12. Tripit

Keep all your travel plans in one place. Tripit is perfect for anyone traveling for business or pleasure multiple times per year. The app keeps track of all your booked flights so you do not have to dig through your email for the information or confirmation codes.
