There are plenty of safe and exciting places to explore in Johannesburg for tourists and digital nomads alike. Safe Areas to Explore in Johannesburg
1. Sandton: The Upscale Business and Shopping Hub
Sandton is one of the safest and most developed areas in Johannesburg. It is known for its luxurious malls, fine dining, and high-end hotels. The Nelson Mandela Square and Sandton City Mall offer world-class shopping and dining experiences. The nearby Mushroom Park provides a great outdoor escape for outdoor activities.
2. Rosebank: A Trendy and Cultural Gem
Rosebank is a fantastic area for visitors looking for a mix of culture, shopping, and entertainment. The Rosebank Mall and The Zone @ Rosebank are home to boutique shops, markets, and diverse restaurants. Every Sunday, the Rosebank Art & Craft Market showcases beautiful handmade African crafts and great souvenirs. The area is well-patrolled and pedestrian-friendly, making it a comfortable place to explore. It’s also a great spot for travelers looking for budget-friendly accommodation in a safe neighborhood. Food lovers will find Johannesburg to be a melting pot of flavors. Visitors have access to virtually every kind of food you can think of. I would head out to Rosebank for modern food choices and plentiful options. You are going to want to try some authentic South African dishes like bunny chow. Also, try shisa nyama while you are visiting. Don’t skimp on the top-tier South African wines to accompany your meal.
Bunny Chow – A hollowed-out loaf of bread filled with spicy curry, originally from Durban but popular in Joburg.
Shisa Nyama or a Braai – It’s a South African BBQ. It features grilled meats like boerewors (sausage), steak, and chicken. These are served with pap, which is a type of maize porridge.
Transportation and Getting Around in Johannesburg
1. Ridesharing & Taxis
✔ Uber & Bolt are the safest and most reliable transport options. Always confirm driver details and avoid hailing cabs off the street.
✔ Zebra Cabs – A reputable metered taxi service, though more expensive than Uber/Bolt.
Tip: Always use the in-app location for pick-ups instead of waiting on the street, especially at night.
2. Gautrain (Best for Long-Distance & Airport Transfers)
✔ A high-speed train connecting OR Tambo Airport, Sandton, Rosebank, and Pretoria.
✔ Safe, clean, and efficient for avoiding traffic congestion.
✔ Gautrain Buses are available at major stations, making local travel easier.
Tip: Buy a Gautrain Gold Card at ticket vending machines or ticket office. No cash payments are accepted on the train.
3. Car Rental (Best for Flexibility & Road Trips)
✔ Ideal for exploring areas outside Joburg like the Cradle of Humankind or Pilanesberg.
✔ Major companies like Avis, Budget, and Europcar operate from OR Tambo Airport.
Tip: Stick to main roads. Avoid driving at night. Use secure parking. Refer to the Areas to Avoid section below. AVOID THOSE AREAS. Many locals I met completely avoid major sections of the city. They will drive well out of their way to prevent car jacking, robberies, etc.

2. MTN phyiscal SIM card
MTN is the major network provider and you can buy a sim card at the airport or in town. The mobile app is easy to use for installing data packages, although the data seems to run out fast.
Areas to Avoid as a Tourist in Johannesburg
1. Hillbrow (DO NOT GO HERE!)
🚨 High crime rates, muggings, and drug-related activity. It’s not safe for tourists, even during the day. Every local I met said they won’t drive through this part of the city anytime of the day.
2. Berea & Yeoville
🚨 These areas have a reputation for violent crime, theft, and hijackings. Many websites describe Yeoville with a vibrant nightlife, but it is best avoided unless you are with a trusted local.
3. Johannesburg CBD (Central Business District)
🚨 Some areas like Maboneng are safe for tourists, but the CBD has issues with pickpocketing, scams, and robberies. Avoid walking around, especially after dark. There are better parts of the city to see anyway.
4. Alexandra (Alex)
🚨 A high-crime township where tourists should not visit alone. Guided tours may be safer but that requires a reputable guide.

This city is incredibly interesting with a cultural mixing pot of people and experiences, with warm hospitality in most areas. My best tip for you when visiting Johannesburg is to stick to well patrolled and popular areas. This is great starting of point for your trip exploring South Africa and the wild Kruger National Park.
